Re: The treatment of stray animals in the Ukraine

Dear ,

I urge you to immediately review the situation regarding the treatment of stray animals within the Ukraine, to hereby putting an end to the barbaric and cruel methods currently being employed.

I recently watched video footages, read statements of witnesses and Ukrainian newpaper articles and I am shocked by the acts of cruelty towards stray animals in many regions of Ukraine. This barbaric and vicious form of animal control in your contry forces me to send letters to animal rights organisations, tourist agencies and newspapers.

Despite of new Animal protection laws signed in your country in 2006 and 2007, the situation as stated by witnesses, citizens of Ukraine and foreign tourists did not change for the better.

Animal services still use dithylinum (suxamethonium chloride), which was outlawed in Ukraine last year, a poison which paralyzes the animal and causes it to die of suffocation in a few hours of agony. There is ample evidence that the poor creatures are still conscious and feel all the pain before they die.

Witnesses in Ukraine state that throughout the last year, there were numerous cases of puppies, dogs and cats being intentionally shot by hunters. Authorities of small Ukrainian communities use different kind of poison - rat poison and Isoniazidum (Tubazidum) anti-tuberculosis drug causing cheap, but very slow and painful death.

Please join the nations that have enacted and enforced strict cruelty-to-animals laws recognizing the fact that animals feel pain and must be spared from unnecessary violence. Please use your power of office to end the cruel killing of animals in Ukraine. There are many practical, cruelty free methods that can be introduced to control the numbers of strays, which poses no harm to the animals, most notably a neutering program. These have proved to be very successful in other countries. Please do intercede. Stop the barbaric cruelty and ensure that a proper legal foundation for animal protection is created in Ukraine

Sincerely,
